Getting a headache in the back of the neck or head

Headaches are a common problem for as many as 45 million people in the United States. There are many types of headaches that can range from mildly irritating to downright debilitating. The source of the pain could be past sports injuries, whiplash, poor posture, repetitive motions, or simply everyday movements. Getting a headache in the back of the neck can be just as common as a headache that pinpoints pain in the back of the eye. The good news is that if you visit a chiropractic center, a doctor of chiropractic can help decrease the effects of your headache.

There are many types of headaches. Most people think that a “really really bad” headache is a migraine. I’m talking about can’t go to work- nothing will work to get this pain out of my head type of pain. Usually those headaches that feel so bad are typical neck-tension or cervico-genic type headaches.  Migraines are special headaches that produce specific symptoms with a certain pain level. A common migraine consists of a pounding sensation, usually on one side of the head accompanied by nausea.  A classic migraine has the same symptoms with the inclusion of a migraine “aura”.  Auras are visual disturbances consisting of bubbles of blurriness in the field of vision.  The causes of cervico-genic headaches are usually a combination of tight muscles pulling on the small joints in the neck. This is called joint dysfunction. These joints a big time pain generators. Trigger points in the neck and back can also refer pain all the way to the forehead and behind the eyes.

The good news is that chiropractic treatment can help to reduce the pain and agony. Chiropractic adjustments decrease muscle tension, increase range of motion and decrease the pain.  With a decrease in dysfunction, symptoms tend to become less severe.  Chiropractors assess each joint in the spine for proper motion. The joints that do not move correctly are usually the pain generators.  If your back or neck has tension, a season of chiropractic wellness can help. There are seven neck joints…. We make sure they are all moving freely!
